What have I learned this semester ?

What have I learned this semester ? That’s not an easy question to answer, because what I ended up learning was the opposite from what I actually wanted to learn. In my first blog post I talked about what I wanted to learn, which included time management with my school and social life. I wanted to learn how to divide and conquer my everyday tasks to make my life less stressful. I also wanted to be able to become a better writer.

However I realized to become a better writer, I needed to step out of my comfort zone and try new writing techniques. This idea of stepping out of my comfort zone put me in situations that involved late night study sessions and random coffee shops till one in the morning. I learned that in order to be successful you do not have to be time efficient. Instead it is better to take your time and pace yourself to your own capabilities.

Sure to some people time management helps them comprehend different ideas, however not everyone is the same way. There were times this semester where I would stare at my laptop blankly, forcing myself to write. I found that even though I would pace myself to write in a time efficient manner, I would get low grades. I realized I got better grades on my papers by working on them at night, not because I felt rushed, but because my ideas would come to life when I wasn’t forcing myself to think. I take no shame in working late nights and sleeping during the day, because that’s the pace which works for me.

I feel like I should do a better job in asking my teachers for help when I am unsure about a specific topic. This includes asking for comments and notes on my rough drafts way before the actual due date. I need to get into a habit of not being afraid to ask for help when I know I am struggling.

So to answer your question I learned that in order to be successful, both academically and socially, I have to complete things my way and pace myself to my abilities. This means late night writing sessions and early day naps. Time efficiency may work for many, I find that I feel rushed and I do not get the best end results. Life should be the way you want to live it not how others want you to live it.

Why do we still read Shakespeare ?

Related image

Throughout my English 1302 class this semester, I have become quite familiar with Shakespeare and his depraved way of displaying human emotion. Shakespeare has reminded that everyone has greed, love, hatred, and jealousy. He has taught me about how the ambition of power overrules a humans emotion for love. In an unusually cruel way, his plays remind me about how important family and relationships are to keep a balanced life. Even though his plays might portray the opposite, I feel like Shakespeare is trying to send the message to his audience to do better.

We study Shakespeare because his plays on a humans experience in life is timeless. Regardless of how cruel and vindictive his plays might prove to be, there is always a silver lining describing some sort of human emotion that is impossible to control. For example in Macbeth, Shakespeare portrays the ambition for power, how that greed takes over everything we thought we could control. Macbeth shows us that even the people we love can betray us at any given moment, due to greed.

Shakespeare’s beautiful poems and plays are a timeless remembrance of lives highs and lows because of our unexpected faith. Some people have good destiny’s and some have bad ones. However all of us are human and the choices we chose to make, determine who we become as a person. Shakespeare’s work will always remain a modern take on how life truly is, even if it is metaphorically describing the complete opposite.

Why Do We Study Shakespeare ?

William Shakespeare was an English poet and actor who was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom. Shakespeare wrote many plays which included, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet. Many of Shakespeare’s plays are known for their tragic death scenes. He is also known for his exaggerations on basic fairy tales, like his famous ‘love story’ Romeo and Juliet. This included Romeo’s death after he found out about his lovers ‘fake’ demise.

This week in class we went over one of Shakespeare’s well known play, Macbeth. We had talked about how his stories contain basic timeless themes, which can relate to any era. For example in Macbeth, we had acted out how the greed of power damages ones physical and physiological well being, especially to those who want it all for themselves. The ambition of power Shakespeare portrayed in Macbeth, relates to our current political spectrum’s corruption.

We study Shakespeare because it reminds us of how human emotions effect the way we interact with each other and how it gets the best of us. Many forget that our emotions heavily influence, our actions and the way we might interact with others. For example, Romeo and Juliet reminds us of how invested we are when it comes to love. It shows us how love clouds our logic and judgement towards the decisions we make for ourselves. Sometimes we forget how heavily influential our human emotions are towards the part of life we think we have in control.

Plagiarism & Academic Honesty

Image result for plagiarism and academic honesty free images

Plagiarism occurs when someone steals another author’s publication, without giving credit to the author and appropriately citing the publication. Plagiarism can be as simple as taking another authors idea and rephrasing it without giving credit to the original author. Plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty is when any type of cheating occurs on an academic activity. Academic honesty is when each source is properly cited and credit is given were its due.

This week we are writing visual rhetoric papers in class, which requires us to analyze a video, costumes, stages, and etc. from Hamilton. In order for us to use videos from the Hamilton production company, we have to add in text citations at the end of each paragraph. Since we are writing a summary based off of someone else’s publication it is required to add them to our work cited page and add internal citations. Our teacher explained how it would be considered plagiarism if we did not add sources for our visual rhetoric summaries.

Academic dishonesty is a way for students to get credit for something they did not do. This can involve cheating off a classmates paper, to taking credit for someone else’s work. In fact plagiarism just happens to be one of the biggest cheating methods students use. Plagiarism can start from not giving proper citations, to stealing the idea of another publication without giving credit. Cheating results in wasting your time because you don’t learn anything and get low grades because sources cannot always be trusted. Academic dishonesty has so many consequences that it is not worth cheating.

Visual Rhetoric

Image result for visual rhetoric free images

The way we look at an image can help us comprehend the story that it is trying to portray. Visual Rhetoric is a way for us to communicate and persuade our point to others, without using verbal communication. A good way to depict an image using its colors, layout, shaped, background features, and architecture is visual rhetoric. Images help show emotions that words are not be able to describe.

This week at a local art show I went to, I used visual Rhetoric to understand what each portrait was trying to portray. I was able to depict every piece by its color, theme, and background. I noticed how the sadder stories have the darker backgrounds. I was able to understand what the author was trying to communicate with me through the way each animal and person was placed. Each color set the tone for the emotions behind that piece. With visual rhetoric, I was able to understand the story the artist was trying portray without any words written on the piece itself.

Style An Argument

Related image

The way we style an argument determines weather or not our point gets across. For example with a diverse group of people we might argue with our brain instead of our beliefs. However with a smaller group of people who share a similar interest, we might argue with your heart. Styling an argument can include creating a strategy for different mindsets. Arguments may present themselves as a relatable platform for people who disagree with each other. Creating a certain strategies before arguing a belief is important for effective persuasion.

In class this week we had discussion questions regrading different aspects of Hamilton the musical. In our class discussion their were many people arguing in different ways for a similar idea. Many came to agree that the logical approach appealed to those who disagreed. One of the questions given in class asked if Aaron Burr’s actions could be excused based on his parents deaths’. Although many did pity him, since Aaron Burr’s parents died and he was left with a family name to protect. Others argued against his actions being fully under his control. Many agreed that emotional arguments did persuade them to sympathize with Aaron Burr’s actions, they did not completely agree with his actions.

Many people do not realize that every argument made, should be made based on the audience presented to them. The more understanding the speaker is to their audience, will determine how attentive their audience is towards them. I believe the more I can connect with my audience, the more they will try to understand my point of view even if they do not fully agree with me at the end. It’s all about how and if you are going to get your point across.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are all techniques authors use to persuade their message to their audience. The writer uses credibility or Ethos, to back up the claim they try to portray in their writing. Another technique they use is Pathos or the emotional appeal authors use to connect with their audience, which helps persuades people to agree with their claim due to reliability. Lastly, authors use logic to idealistically change ones mind using reasoning.

Ethos, logos, and pathos is used daily. For example, in everyday news articles, it is believed they use logic or logos to set their claims across. Another example includes, magazine articles. This Is What I Want To Learn This Semester

Image result for time management free images

As a junior in high school I want to learn time management and how to efficiently juggle my work load and social life. I want to be able to take time efficiency into consideration when working on my papers. Instead of staying up late at night to finish up assignments, I want to space them out by working on it throughout the week.

I believe this semester’s lab credits’ will help me improve my writing skills within a reasonable amount of time. I also believe the work I put in this semester will define my ability to manage my time management skills, since this semester will be tougher then last semester. I want to be able to balance my college and high school assignments instead of focusing on one more then the other like last semester.
